Plastic is ubiquitous in our society and is used for a variety of purposes, from food packaging to electronics to clothing and toys. The effects of plastic pollution are catastrophic for our environment. Millions of tons of waste are produced every day, much of it environmentally harmful plastic. Especially in the oceans, plastic causes severe damage to marine flora and fauna and also endangers human health. Microplastics are particularly problematic because they enter the oceans through wastewater, meteorite, erosion, and illegal dumping, where they are ingested by marine organisms.
